Alltel Wireless announced today that it's the first mobile operator in North America to offer the MyShow application to its customers. Presented as a "user-generated mobile slideshow application", MyShow allows camera phone owners to create slideshows with their in-phone photos and publish them, almost instantly, on the Web.
MyShow has a special
Web page, run by FunMobility Inc., that seems to be some kind of "YouTube meets Photobucket" site. With MyShow, Alltel users can compose personalized slideshows (music and text can be included) and upload them on the website. Moreover, the slideshows can be easily embedded on social networking websites like MySpace and Facebook.
Users who want to use MyShow can get it for only $3.99 per month.
Talking about the new application, Kristi Crum, director of multimedia content for Alltel Wireless, said: "For customers looking for an easy way to share their photos with friends and family, MyShow delivers the ultimate slideshow tool. MyShow is another example of Alltel delivering tools and applications that enable our customers to get the most out of their phone and personalize their wireless experience."
Most of Alltel's current handsets are camera phones, but none of them have a camera with more than 2 Megapixels. Even so, users have a pretty wide offer to choose from: LG Scoop (also known as LG Rumor), Motorola MOTORORK Z6m, Motorola MOTORAZR V9m,
LG Glimmer, BlackBerry Curve 8330, HTC Touch, HTC PPC6800 and so on. An interesting aspect is that the only major handset manufacturer that has no handsets in Alltel's line-up of products is Nokia.
With slightly over 13 million customers, Alltel is currently the fifth mobile carrier in the US, after the giants AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. The company will soon be
integrated into Verizon, so as to form the largest-ever North American mobile operator.
