More speed for mobile users

Alltel Wireless, the fifth largest mobile carrier in the US, has recently announced that its high-speed EVDO Rev A network will be expanded on the East Coast to cover the so-called Research Triangle region. Situated in North Carolina, the Research Triangle is the area between the cities of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Of course, all the three towns will benefit from the EVDO Rev A network, as well as the other smaller cities from the surroundings.

With EVDO Rev A connectivity, Alltel's users are able to achieve data transfer speeds of up to 3.1 Mbps in downlink, as opposed to up to only 2.4 Mbps achieved via the old network. Obviously, in order to achieve these new speeds while on the go, users must have one of Alltel's EVDO Rev A capable mobile devices. These include HTC PPC6800 and HTC Touch, which can be upgraded to EVDO Rev A, for free, by downloading the appropriate software updates from the HTC USA official website.

"Alltel Wireless is committed to bringing our customers the fast wireless broadband service they expect in their business and personal lives. This network upgrade will give our customers secure, reliable access to the latest wireless technology," stated Ron Senchak, vice president of business solutions for Alltel in North Carolina.

The network broadening in North Carolina comes shortly after Alltel has extended its EVDO Rev A coverage across Ohio - in the cities of Cleveland, Akron and Canton.

Although it's the fifth largest US carrier in terms of subscribers (with about 13 million customers), Alltel is the first when it comes to network coverage. This is one of the reasons why Verizon Wireless, the second largest carrier in the US and on the whole American continent, announced that it would acquire Alltel by the end of 2008.
