Earlier this month, green group Oceana issued a report pointing the finger at nine of the dirtiest fisheries currently operating in the waters of the United States.

Since reading lengthy reports is not all that many people's idea of having a good time, the organization has also rolled out an infographic on the matter at hand.

This infographic is available below, and it pretty much sums up all that one needs to know about by-catch in the United States, and about how unsustainable fishing practices affect marine ecosystems.

Thus, Oceana claims that, each year, thousands of dolphins, whales and other sea creatures are killed by gillnets, longlines, trawls and the like, Inhabitat reports.

“Whether it’s the thousands of sea turtles that are caught to bring you shrimp or the millions of pounds of cod and halibut that are thrown overboard after fishermen have reached their quota, bycatch is a waste of our ocean’s resources.”

“Bycatch also represents a real economic loss when one fisherman trashes another fisherman’s catch,” Dominique Cano-Stocco, campaign director at Oceana, explained in a recent statement.

Check out the infographic to learn more about how unsuitable fishing practices are harming our oceans, and about ways to limit the fishing industry's impact on marine ecosystems.
