An all-new version of Twitter is available for iOS customers starting today with cool features like photo filters, easier access to DMs, previews for Tweets with photos and videos, and a UI refresh for easier navigation. Most of the new oomph is geared towards iPad users.

Having been neglected in terms of platform-specific features for quite some time, iPad users can rejoice at the new Twitter 6.5 build, which Twitter Inc. describes as a “minor” update. However, avid users will beg to differ, especially those tweeting from a tablet.

For example, you can now use the official Twitter app to choose between “Top” and “All” Tweets in search results, check out previews in your timeline for Tweets with Twitter photos, Vine videos, and other select content, and reply, retweet, favorite, or follow someone directly from a home timeline Tweet.

Some aesthetic tweaks have been made, leading to easier access to direct messages (DM) and easier navigation throughout the app. The Discover feature has been updated to show Tweets related to Trends and you can now apply cool filters to your photos before sending them off to your followers.

Twitter 6.5 for iDevices is localized in English, Arabic, Bokmål, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Malay, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Simplified Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and Turkish.

To download Twitter 6.5, all you need is an iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, iPad second generation, iPad third generation, iPad fourth generation, iPad Air, iPad mini, iPad mini with Retina display, iPod touch fourth generation, or iPod touch fifth generation, running iOS 6.0 or above.

In related Twitter news, the microblogging service this week introduced a very handy “mute” feature that basically lets you stick duct tape on the mouths of those whose Tweets annoy you, yet still retain them in your list.

In a blog entry made yesterday, the company said, “Today we’re beginning to introduce a new account feature called mute to people who use our iPhone and Android apps and twitter.com. Mute gives you even more control over the content you see on Twitter by letting you remove a user’s content from key parts of your Twitter experience.”

Here’s where you can get the full scoop on Twitter’s new mute feature, and keep in mind that not everyone can use it yet. According to the company, the feature is gradually rolling out to everyone.
