To say that Tilda Swinton is not your regular Hollywood star would be an understatement, especially considering her movie choices so far. In a new interview to promote “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” Tilda explains how she drew on personal experiences to play the troubled mother.

The film, in which Swinton plays the mother of a very troubled teenager, has already gotten critics buzzing about its chances of winning her an Oscar.

As such, it’s no wonder people want to know how come she was able to portray such a character in front of the camera, which is precisely what Vogue asked her (quotes via the Daily Mail).

Swinton’s answer is shocking, to say the least: every pregnant woman must, at least once, think in fear that she might give birth to the devil; to this she thought when she breathed life into her character.

“It’s got about as much to do with bringing up children as Rosemary’s Baby is about being pregnant,” she says of “We Need to Talk About Kevin.”

“It’s everybody’s nightmare that, when they’re pregnant, they’re going to give birth to the devil. That when they bring up children, especially a boy, they’re going to give birth to this violence,” the actress adds.

“What I find most intriguing about Eva is not that she gives birth to and raises this misanthropic and alienated, sociopathic child and that its really foreign and outside of herself,” she adds.

But there’s more to the violent nature of her son than she might care to admit at first.

“The thing that’s really the nightmare is that she recognizes it only too well, because its hers, The misanthropy is hers. That violence is hers,” Swinton adds.

“We Need to Talk About Kevin” will get limited release in the US on December 2. Check out the trailer below to see what the fuss is all about.
