Solid state drives are gaining some ground and market acceptance on the mobile computing segment as their low power consumption, light weight and shock resistance are highly valuable and are compensating for the higher price tag and lower data storage capabilities. On the desktop market segment, solid state drives are not fairing equally well as desktop computer users are more performance oriented and the smaller storage capabilities of the SSD units are coming as a big
black mark.

As the solid state drives are able to act as non volatile random access memory units, they could theoretically boost the performance and lower the booting time of a desktop computer system when used in conjunction with a traditional hard disk drive and that is way Alienware, one of the most important computer manufacturing companies that specializes in gaming systems, announced the introduction of 64GB solid state drives in desktop systems.

Alienware will soon start shipping the Area-51 ALX and Aurora ALX desktop computer systems with solid state drives in dual RAID 0 setups and according the manufacturing company they will be the first such computers to feature SSDs on the market.

''More than just a noteworthy achievement, being first to market with the 64GB SSD means Alienware's desktop users can enjoy invaluable benefits not available anywhere else,'' said Marc Diana, Product Marketing Manager for Alienware. ''Now, our ALX customers can not only take advantage of the latest graphics and processor technology, but also the latest breakthrough in storage drives for blazing-fast data access and maximum dependability.''

The 64GB solid state drives are offering a number of advantages over the traditional hard disk drives and they are capable of faster access times that directly translates into lower boot times and increased overall performance. On the reliability part, as the solid state drives are having no moving parts, they are immune to the wear and tear that damaged the hard disk drives after extended use periods, while at the same time the SSD units are drawing less power and are completely silent.
