When he’s not directing robot movies, Michael Bay is taking a great interest in producing alien flicks, which, according to some, will come to replace vampires onscreen next year. The first trailer for “I Am Number Four” is out.

Though boasting a cast that includes relative newcomers, the film is already getting a lot of media attention for the above-mentioned reason: it could de-throne “Twilight.”

“I Am Number Four” is based on a series of novels as well and tells the story of a group of aliens who go into hiding on earth – and who have to fight for their life against some unknown force.

As Entertainment Weekly puts it, the plot itself is not groundbreaking new, but the big screen adaptation comes with the right ingredients to become the next hit franchise.

For starters, it has British actor Alex Pettyfer as the lead: young, gorgeous and with awesome supernatural powers, Alex is Number Four, the one who has to fight for his life because they’re coming for him – here and now.

As he goes into hiding in a high school, he meets the love of his life, played by Dianna Agron of “Glee,” who also happens to be Alex’s real-life love interest. She too has special powers.

Also starring is “Deadwood’s” Timothy Olyphant, who comes to replace Sharlto Copley – perhaps the bad guy in the film, seeing how Olyphant can play quite a meanie when he wants to.

Teresa Palmer is Number Six. Further details on the cast are not yet known but more will be unveiled in due time – the film is not out until February 2011.

“The book is pretty much perfectly set up to be turned into a movie produced by Michael Bay and helmed by Eagle Eye director D.J. Caruso,” EW writes.

“That is to say, there are explosions, vaguely defined characters running away from things, and slightly better defined characters running away from things,” the same media outlet says.

Think “Transformers” with aliens instead of robots, other voices in the blogosphere suggest.

“The trailer does not disappoint on that front, even giving us a glimpse of Number Four’s glowy hands and telekinetic abilities amongst all the carnage,” EW also writes.

Below is the trailer. Watch it and see whether “I Am Number Four” is something you’d personally want to see in a theater near you.
