Fans of the Aliens franchise are quite excited about the upcoming Colonial Marines video game, but some of them are rather upset that they can’t play as female characters in the game’s multiplayer mode, and have started a petition to make their voices heard.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is being developed by Gearbox Software and will be published by Sega in February, next year.

We have heard quite a lot of details about the squad-based shooter that will put players in the combat boots of Marines that need to survive on a spaceship infested by the deadly Xenomorphs.

While the game’s story will portray female Marines, fans don’t have the option of creating a female character in the title’s multiplayer mode.

This has upset quite a few fans so, in order to make their voices heard, a petition has been organized by a woman called Melissa K. She wants Gearbox to add the ability of playing as female characters in the multiplayer mode in order to reflect the rich heritage of the series.

"The Aliens franchise started the first female action hero," she said. "Women are a big part of the Aliens universe. The main character, the Queen Alien, the supporting female cast members, and even the United States Colonial Marines has many female marines, roughly close to the same number as men enlisted."

"There is roughly 5-6 months before the game goes Gold and releases February 12th, 2013 so we need to let them know now that they are not being true to the Aliens universe by not including the ability to play as a female in Multiplayer. There are many females that enjoy playing video games and are fans of the films who are tired of playing as a male all the time. Let’s let Gearbox Software know what they are doing is not true to the franchise!"

As of right now, the petition has over 2,000 signatures and Gearbox has revealed that it’s taking every fan feedback into considering before releasing Aliens: Colonial Marines next year.
