Sigourney Weaver confirms she's on board Neill Blomkamp's “Alien” sequel for Fox

If you needed even more confirmation that Sigourney Weaver will be in Neill Blomkamp’s “Alien” sequel, here it is: on the red carpet at the premiere of his latest movie, “Chappie,” both the director and the leading lady confirmed it for ET cameras.

You can see a short video with it below.

20th Century Fox confirmed plans for an “Alien” sequel a while back, with director Neill Blomkamp on board. Since the announcement came shortly after he posted fan-made “Alien” artwork to his Instagram, it was assumed that either this had been the plan all along, or that Fox was watching and saw the positive feedback he got for the photos, so they gave him the movie.

Either way, Blomkamp is thrilled: Ridley Scott’s original “Alien” movie, with Sigourney Weaver as Ripley, is the reason he got into filmmaking in the first place, and he never made a secret of being a huge fan of the franchise.

He plans to make this an “Alien” sequel not related to “Prometheus,” for which Ridley is now working on a sequel. He’s also made no secret of wanting Weaver back as Ripley.

As Blomkamp puts it, there is no “Alien” without Ripley, and Weaver agrees: apparently, he wouldn’t have even considered making the movie if her character wouldn’t be included.

For the time being, the “Alien” sequel doesn’t have a release date, but the director says he’ll start working on it as early as next week. Amazing news, indeed.
