Alien Arena 2008, one of the best freeware, open source first-person shooters, was released, as announced by COR Entertainment, LLC. Alien Arena 2008 is a follow-up of the well-known Alien Arena 2007, and brings major improvements that smooth up the gameplay.

Alien Arena 2008 is a standalone 3D FPS with online multiplayer features, built from the source code of Quake II and III, games produced by id Software under the GPL license. It features 32-bit graphics, new particle engine and effects, light blooms, reflective water, high resolution textures and skins, improved models and much more.

The game offers 37 levels, or arenas, which can be played online against other players, or against the CodeRED bots provided. The theme of the game is mainly changed, going to a more darker, serious approach. The weapon models got a facelift and their balance was "tweaked, re-tweaked, and re-tweaked again with tremendous input from the community as well as outsiders."

On the red.planetarena.org site, one of the developers posted: "Alien Arena 2008 also offers a change to it's overall theme, moving towards a slightler darker, more serious tone, while still retaining a good bit of it's retro style, creating an interesting marriage between classic and modern sci-fi."

To start playing the game, you will have to unzip the archive in a directory where you wish to place it. Then, you can run the game by opening up the crx file. In case you want to start a dedicated server, launch crded. If you want to play Alien Arena 2008, you will need a computer with the following specs:

■ A 1GHz CPU ■ 256 MB RAM ■ 500 MB hard disk space ■ 3D Accelerator

Alien Arena 2008 comes for Linux, Windows, and soon a Mac port will be released in almost one week. Take a look at the screenshots we took in a short gaming session:
