The mascara-leaden artist, who came into the spotlight with such tracks that glorified necrophilia, sadomasochism and hedonism, has gone on a new path. He plans to built a school for at-risk teenagers, where they can learn how to develop their creative side and find out more about Jesus.
Together with Grand Canyon University in Phoenix, that will provide the land for the Rock school and part of the money to build it, Alice Cooper says that the center will be, quote, 'a sanctuary where they don't get shot, they don't get stabbed, they don't have to worry about somebody trying to sell them drugs'.
The rocker also stressed the importance of a proper Christian education amongst the youngsters, claiming that the United States need 'a good hypodermic needle shot of morality'. Nevertheless, the 58-year-old performer, who rediscovered Jesus almost 16 years ago when he quit drinking, insists that the school won't have a chapel of its own, and neither will the teenagers be 'beaten over the head with a Bible'.
Instead, counselors will offer advice and religious guidance only to those interested. Other activities will include lessons on songwriting and playing guitar (with Cooper himself in the role of the teacher), ballet (given by his wife) and sports (basketball and rock-climbing). There will be a multitude of various rooms in the school, amongst which a concert hall, a concert hall, game rooms and recording studios.
The project is only in its first phase and the money for The Rock still has to be raised. Estimates show that it will cost around $3 million, but Cooper is very confident about the future: he said that one of the advantages of being a rock star is that you have a full rolodex. Both the rocker and the COE of the University said that they have high hopes the school will be inaugurated sometime next year.
