Alcatel is once again testing smartphone market with another Android phone, the OT986. Although the handset maker is mostly known for its budget-friendly phones, this time it exceeded its own expectations to offer customers a top-tier device.

It appears that the Alcatel OT986 will be available in Europe and China, but Android fans living in the Mainland will be able to get it as TCL S900.

For the time being, we know that handset will be available for purchase in China for a suggested retail price of 1,999 yuan (315 USD or 250 EUR), but there are no details on the European model’s price tag yet.

Alcatel OT896 will be shipped with Google’s latest Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich operating system out of the box. In addition, the smartphone is said to pack a stunning 4.5-inch HD IPS capacitive display that supports 720 x 1280 pixels resolution.

On the inside, the OT896 will be equipped with a dual-core TI OMAP 4660 processor clocked at 1.5 GHz, 1GB on RAM, 8GB of internal memory, as well as microSD card slot for memory expansion.

The phone is said to be 9.75 thin and will feature on-screen keys. Sadly, there’s only a 5-megapixel rear photo snapper with autofocus, LED flash and HD (720p) video recording, as well as a secondary 2-megapixel front-facing camera for video calls.

In the same piece of news, Alcatel will also launch a more affordable version of the OT896, which will be equipped with a dual-core processor clocked at 1.2 GHz and only 4GB of internal memory. However, there are no details on the phone’s name, availability or pricing options.

Alcatel OT896 and its Chinese counterpart, the TCL S900 will be launched in the following weeks, probably in late June or early July. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
