Greenheads will be glad to hear that, for some months now, the world has been one meat-eater short, and that the “convert” is none other than former US Vice President Al Gore.

The news reached the public quite by mistake. Thus, this past Saturday, Forbes magazine ran an article about a vegan product line dubbed Hampton Creek Foods, and mentioned that Al Gore was also thinking about getting behind the initiative.

“Newly turned vegan Al Gore is also circling,” the publication wrote, and this was more than enough to get people's attention.

The Washington Post decided to follow up on this piece of information, and managed to get hold of one of the former vice president's peers.

The publication named its source “an individual familiar with Gore's decision,” and said that the former confirmed that, a few months ago, Al Gore turned vegan.

The former vice president has not yet confirmed these claims, but he hasn't contradicted them either, which is why chances are that the “individual familiar with Gore's decision” was telling the truth.

Presently, the question that remains unanswered is why Al Gore decided to quit eating meat and dairy. All things considered, he must have had environmental, health or ethical considerations on his mind.

Given the former vice president's keen interest in raising awareness of climate change and global warming, it is likely that, if he did become a vegan, he did it for the sake of the planet.

As reported on several occasions, the meat and dairy industry are noteworthy polluters, not to mention the fact that they use of a lot of the world's resources to keep up and running.

Hence the seemingly endless anti-meat consumption campaigns rolled out by environmentalists and the abundance of green oriented movements such as “Meatless Mondays.”

Interestingly enough, former US President Bill Clinton, with whom Al Gore served in the White House, has also been a vegetarian for nearly three years now.
