Akamai refreshed their web security solution Kona Site Defender with a set of enhancements that aim at improving the flexibility and simplicity in defending websites and web applications.

The modifications touch on the Web Application Firewall (WAF), network layer controls, new user validation capabilities as well as configuration and automation tools.

Relying on Akamai’s newly introduced common rules set, Kona can counter attacks such as those performed with both LOIC (Low Orbit Ion Cannon) and HOIC (High Orbit Ion Cannon), but not limited to these tools only.

With the new rate control capabilities, anomalous traffic from users behind a proxy can be assessed as being legitimate or malicious. Moreover, through the newly introduced user validation module, information about the source of the traffic can be learned and machine-based attacks can be reduced because of multi-step processing.

Kona Site Defender is part of the Akamai Kona Security Solutions, which have been created to offer superior cloud computing security.
