From Michael Robertson

If you really need to edit your documents online, and you don't have time to wait for Writely, recently acquired by Google, then AjaxWrite might be a good solution for now.

The new service, based on the Ajax technology, is, as you might have guessed an online text processor and is touted by Michael Robertson, also responsible for Linspire, as being capable to replace the Word application in the Office suite.

AjaxWrite is able to open documents with the .doc extension and those formatted with StarOffice, OpenOffice etc., and allows you to edit them in a matter of seconds.

The interesting part is that AjaxWrite works only with Firefox 1.5, or above, not being compatible with other browsing solutions.

Still, despite Michael Robertson's enthusiasm, AjaxWrite is not quite ready to go against Microsoft Word, the service lacking some important features found in the Office suite application. Although Google hasn't launched the Writely service yet, AjaxWrite is also missing some those features too, such as the possibility to simultaneously edit documents by collaborators chosen by the main user and the ability to store the documents on the Internet.

Anyway, if you're not ecstatic about AjaxWrite, Michael Robertson says it would be wise if you visited ajaxLaunch.com weekly, because there will be new applications every Wednesday.
