One of the latest features wireless carrier Bharti Airtel offers to its users includes free access to Facebook mobile, offering them the possibility to post status updates, to send messages to their friends, write on walls and do other actions more straight from their mobile phones. According to the company, the new option is available effective immediately to all of its current Airtel mobile Internet customers, and should become available for new mobile Internet users as soon as they activate Facebook Mobile on Airtel.

“We are pleased to bring an industry-leading offer to our 130 million plus customers by announcing this long-term partnership with Facebook - the popular social media service. Our mobile customers will also be the first in the world to enjoy Facebook on their Airtel mobile in five vernacular languages. All of this reiterates our commitment to customers to offer the best value-for-money services that enable their lifestyles,” cited Shireesh Joshi, Chief Marketing Officer- Mobile Services, Bharti Airtel. “As India’s leading telco, Bharti Airtel has always stood for technological innovation and personalized customer experience, and this is one of many innovations coming from us.”

One thing that is certain is that access to social networking sites has become one of the most wanted features in the mobile space. More and more mobile phone users choose to access such destinations straight from their handsets instead from a desktop computer, mainly courtesy of the flexibility this options comes with. One would not be tied anymore to the computer, but would have the possibility to stay connected with friends at all times.

“Working closely with Bharti Airtel is a great opportunity to bring our full mobile experience to their 130 million customers across India,” remarked Henri Moissinac, Head of Mobile Business at Facebook. “Today, more than 100 million Facebook users around the world access the site through their mobile devices. As mobile connectivity in India continues to grow, Airtel’s free offering of our full mobile site enables millions of people - whether they’re currently using Facebook or setting up their profiles for the first time - to connect with their Facebook friends wherever they are.”

The Facebook mobile site is expected to become available in English and Hindi, as well as in five Indian languages, including Punjabi, Bengali, Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam. It seems that all these options should become available by July 15. The wireless carrier would offer free access to the Facebook mobile site from users's handsets until August 31, 2010.
