Apple has issued the AirPort Extreme Update 2008-004, an update for Intel Mac owners running the latest version of Leopard available (Mac OS X 10.5.5). The release was predictable, following a buggy AirPort Extreme Update 2008 – 003.

Last week, Apple released AirPort Extreme Update 2008-003, a firmware upgrade for its wireless networking solution built into newer Macs. Many Mac users snagged the update immediately, but had little success fixing their wireless issues. Apple soon pulled the update, which it had recommended to “all Intel-based Macintosh” users “running Mac OS 10.5.5.” The 2008 – 003 update was supposed to resolves issues with AirPort connections when roaming in large Wi-Fi networks.

A post over at MacFixIt explained how lots of people had had “very intermittent wireless connections since upgrading to 'AirPort Extreme update 2008-002' back in June.” The post went on to say that “Apple finally acknowledges this by patching it with 'AirPort extreme update 2008-003' which came out today 10/21.” However, “[…] guess what... I'm still having the same problem after the update,” wrote the author of the post.

Currently, Apple's AirPort Extreme Update 2008 – 004 is only available via Leopard's build-in Software Update mechanism, meaning no standalone installer this time. Apple's downloads page is likely to include the update later on, but for now, Software Update is the only way to go. The same fixes are included in this release.

AirPort Extreme Update 2008 - 004

This update is recommended for all Intel-based Macintosh computers running Mac OS 10.5.5 and resolves some issues with AirPort connections when roaming in large Wi-Fi networks.

Apple generally advises users to download and install the latest updates available for their computers, and this time is no different. To update your AirPort firmware, click on the Apple button, choose Software Update, and then select AirPort Extreme Update 2008 – 004 from the list of available updates.

The update causes my MacBook extremely slow in accessing internet through my NetGear router.

"2008-004" conflicts with some NetGear wireless routers, in particular, with my WGR614. I tested against the following combinations:

Leopard without 2008-004, with NetGear: Good
Leopard with 2008-004, with NetGear: Bad
Leopard with 2008-004, with Air Port Extreme: Good
Leopard with 2008-004, with an unknown router: Good
PC, with NetGear: Good

The "Bad" means the web access becomes so slow that 9 out of 10 times Gmail could not even show its login page.

My mac crashed the last two days already 7 times!!!! I'm at uni. Perhaps it has something to do with large networks but I'm pretty pissed! Don't install it!

My macbook pro is having the same issues when connecting through my netgear router, I have the same WGR614. Bittorrent or ftp programs work around normal transfer rates, where as my internet crawls. Is there no way to roll back this update without time machine installed?

Thanks so much for the posts. I'm having the same troubles (very slow connections with Netgear ...614). Ugh...maddening! I'm off to the Apple Genius Bar tomorrow to see what they can do. If I learn anything worth posting, I'll let you all know.
