The decreasing number of players in massively multiplayer online role-playing game Aion has forced NCsoft to decide the merging of some of the game's servers. This will happen in both North America and Europe. While no official dates have been made public, producer Chris Hager promised in his latest letter to the community that the timetable and plan for the server merger would be disclosed in the following weeks.

This move is meant to amend some of the complaints of the remaining user base, due to the server population shortages. Many gamers are having a hard time grouping for instances and raids and cannot enjoy the end-game content. Also, prices for items put up for sale on the auction houses are unnaturally high and this hurts the MMO's economy.

A number of other improvements to Aion have also been announced in Hager’s public letter. The upcoming 1.9 patch will speed up leveling by increasing experience rewards from quests, will add a revamped “Looking for Group” user interface feature and new gameplay systems like arms fusion, daily quests or weapon and armor rental. A character transfer service will be launched during the month of June, this year, and will be free for a limited time. More information about this subject will come as the date when the service will go live nears.

Hager and his team are currently targeting a Fall 2010 release schedule for the Aion 2.0 update on the Western shores. This new batch of content is already undergoing bug fixes on the Korean Test Server and will soon reach NCsoft's Korean official servers. New dungeons, new skills, an increased level cap to 55, a functioning pet system and various UI enhancements are just a few of the features that will be included in this hefty patch.

I've been playing MMO's since EQ and I'd consider the 3 months I spent on Aion as the worst 3 months I've ever put into any MMO. I just kept telling myself "it'll get better", but no, it just got worse.

This is what NcSoft should be asking themselves......."Less than 3% of all characters in the game are capped (level 50) and less than 10% are even above level 40. Why is that ???

Simple, because 90% of the people buy the game, play the free month, maybe go ahead with another month or two then quit.

Let me be very clear about it, this game is terrible. There is zero to be fun had ever. Pick a spot, spend 6-8 hours in the same spot killing the same respawns...pick another spot...do it again. If your lucky one of the few capped players will gank you, then park themselves in the grinding spot ganking anyone who gets near. Then you have nothing to do but log out...which is the BEST part of this game.

I have been playing Aion since the North American closed beta event #2, and while it is only my second MMO -- Guild Wars was first, another NCSoft game -- I really enjoy it. I play on the Vaizel server, very casually since I am also a student. I have seen many players who have reached the level 50 cap; I don't know where Tracy is getting his or her data. My character is only level 43 right now, but I've had a ton of fun getting there.

Personally, I think Aion is an excellent game, or at least an excellent game in the making and just a good game for now. In a few days, patch 1.9 will be released, and NCSoft is planning 2.0 to be released this coming fall, from what I have read about it on the main Aion website. (A quick Google search for Aion 2.0 will give plenty of information.) If you interact with the people playing on your server -- it is an MMO afterall -- and be friendly with them, then it makes it incredibly easy to find groups. This comes in handy when you face a ganker: strength in numbers.

I think what Tracy here did that made the game so not fun for him or her was trying to grind as quickly as possible to level 50. The game does not work like that. The point is not to get to 50 as quickly as possible; you should enjoy the journey to 50. That's what all the content is for! Do the side quests, although some do have you grinding, and sometimes you do have to grind to get to the next level. But that's why do it in groups! It goes by faster and you have people to talk to in the meantime. There isn't much end-game content at 50 now, but I think that's what 2.0 will be for (not sure on that one, though).
