The games might become too big to fit on Blu-ray discs

The technology team Luminous Studio believes that for the next generation of hardware and gamers the borders between gameplay assets and computer generated cutscenes will be eliminated and players will enjoy better graphics across the board.

Yoshihisa Hashimoto, who is the Chief Technology Officer working at Square Enix, has told RPGSite in relation to the Agni’s Philosophy demo, that, “For the backgrounds used in this – the mountains, the houses – we are using exactly the same assets as are used in the Visual Works CG version.”

He added, “Of course, it’s too massive of a data to use in a game as-is, but I think the look and feel will probably remain. If we had time, we could’ve compressed the data even smaller. We didn’t have time to do that, so we just used the same master data – but it can definitely be reduced.”

The problem with linking assets that have only traditionally used in cutscenes to the overall gameplay is that the size of any product will significantly increase and one Blu-ray disk might not be big enough to hold the entire experience.

Hashimoto does believe that better compressing techniques might solve that issue before the next generation of home consoles is launched.

Agni’s Philosophy is a new title from Square Enix that is designed to show off a new game engine which can be used across a variety of genres, with a focus on the action role playing games that the publisher is known for.

Neither Sony nor Microsoft have officially announced their upcoming devices but analysts believes that the Xbox 720 and the PlayStation 4 might be revealed before the end of the year, with the actual launches set to take place in late 2013.

The Nintendo Wii U will be out this year before the core Christmas shopping season.
