It’s absurd to get Botox and other rejuvenating procedures when the first signs of growing old have not even started to show – like, say, when you’re 18. Singer Charice, who is about to join the hit television series “Glee” admitted in a recent interview in the Philippines that she got Botox jabs and underwent a treatment with Thermage to look “fresh” for the cameras, People magazine writes.

Arguably, nothing could be fresher than the face of an 18-year-old, especially if she was a stranger to excess (ranging her from sun exposure to alcohol, cigarettes and drugs), which seems to be the case of Charice. Yet she went for the popular jab and the skin-tightening procedure because she wanted her face to look less round, which is reportedly the effect of chewing too much gum. The video embedded at the end of the article shows the pop star undergoing the two treatments and speaking about them.

“The singer revealed she recently got Botox and a skin-tightening Thermage procedure ‘to look fresh on camera.’ Charice was treated by local cosmetic dermatologist Vicki Belo, who is the medical director of several skin clinics in the country. Belo said that she aimed to alter the shape of the singer’s ‘naturally round face.’ ‘Charice’s face, I’ve been noticing, it’s been getting wider,’ Belo was quoted as saying. She blamed the widening on the singer’s gum-chewing habit. ‘Our chewing muscles, if you chew a lot of gums, it gets bigger.’ Charice – who will play an exchange student on Glee and a rival to Lea Michele’s Rachel – admitted she felt pressure to look good for the hit TV series,” People writes.

Most celebrity bloggers reacted to this saying that it was a crying shame that a girl as beautiful and as talented as Charice should feel this kind of pressure from the industry to get Botox as such a young age. Others, of course, blamed her parents and her management for allowing her (and perhaps even pushing her) to do this. In response, her spokesperson tells Us Magazine that the entire thing was taken out of context and made to sound like something it was not. Whatever treatment the singer got, it was because of a problem she had – and definitely not for cosmetic reasons.

“[It was meant] to relieve a jaw problem similar to TMJ. It did not hurt; it relieved the pain. You’ve seen her face – she doesn’t have a wrinkle in it so she wouldn’t need it for cosmetic purposes. The Glee people are thrilled with the way she looks which is why she got the part,” Charice’s rep tells Us.
