New adventures in the fantasy MMORPG

There are certainly a lot of MMORPGs out there, many struggling to find a story universe in which all of the classes and characters make sense. One game that managed such a thing is Funcom's Age of Conan, which has its background in the universe of the famous warrior.

After registering quite a lot of acclaim from critics and being fairly popular in front of other titles like Warhammer Online, the game was rumored to be facing termination, but Funcom fought back and brought the title into the public spotlight again. Now, the company has announced the first expansion to the game, subtitled Rise of the Godslayer.

The add-on will be inspired from the rich and colorful cultures of eastern Asia and will send players on a voyage to the Empire of Khitai, where many hours of epic adventures await each and every one of them. New features like faction gameplay and an alternate advancement system will also be included, besides the new storyline and open world.

“Since the turn of the year the team has been working hard on bringing the Empire of Khitai to life,” says Craig Morrison, game director and executive producer on ‘Rise of the Godslayer.’ “Our focus now is on expanding on the strengths of the game by providing massive new regions of the world to explore, and the Empire of Khitai offers a whole new perspective on the Conan lore and universe. ‘Age of Conan’ has evolved leaps and bounds since its launch last year, and we are making sure to build on the existing qualities and expand them further with the brand new content and gameplay in ‘Rise of the Godslayer’.”

The action, of course, takes place in the Empire of Khitai, after a young Conan killed the Elephant God and plunged the Asian territory into chaos and despair. Heroes must now go out and find out just what is the source of the troubles encountered by its inhabitants.

If you happen to be up and around Cologne these days, you can try out the new expansion at the Funcom booth at GamesCon. “Development on ‘Rise of the Godslayer’ is progressing very well, something gamers can see and experience for themselves this week,” Funcom CEO Trond Arne Aas says. “We have the game up and running on the showfloor at GamesCom, and we encourage everyone there to come visit us and give the expansion a try. We believe ‘Rise of the Godslayer’ will be a strong addition to the ‘Age of Conan’ brand.”
