It's starting to look like it's not a good day for major websites. Twitter just recovered from a mystery outage, now Amazon.com is down.

But, whereas nobody raises an eyebrow when Twitter goes down, a full out Amazon.com outage is rare to say the least.

And you don't even get the cute fail whale to keep you company, Amazon just returns the cold "Http/1.1 Service Unavailable" message and that's that.

There doesn't seem to be a problem with Amazon Web Services, a good thing considering just how many websites and companies, big and small, rely on it.

Strangely, some internal links were still working even as the homepage was not.

It's probably a temporary outage, the site could come back at any time now, though it may be intermittently.

UPDATE: The site is back up and seems to be working. Still, it went down for more than 45 minutes, a huge period for the largest online retailer in the world.

UPDATE 2: "The gateway page of Amazon.com was offline to some customers for approximately 49 minutes. Other pages of the site were accessible and AWS was not impacted," Amazon explained.
