Chinese OEM Gionee has just introduced a new entry-level Android smartphone in India, the Pioneer P2S. The device is now available for purchase via Gionee’s official online store for only Rs 6,499 ($110 / €80) outright. It can be found in white, black, blue and pink color options.

It’s clear that Gionee has launched the Pioneer P2S in order to compete with Motorola’s Moto E, which is now one of the hottest Android smartphones in India.

Unfortunately, Gionee’s budget-friendly smartphone doesn’t do too good against the Moto E, especially when it comes to software.

While the Moto E ships with Android 4.4.2 KitKat operating system out of the box and Motorola has just confirmed that it will offer an upgrade to Android 4.4.3 soon, Gionee Pioneer P2S is powered by an older version of the mobile platform, namely Jelly Bean 4.2.

Also, Gionee is unlikely to offer any software upgrades for this cheap device, so owners will be stuck on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean until the phone gets discontinued.

Yet, the Chinese company has priced the Pioneer P2S only slightly lower than the Moto E, which is available in India for Rs 6,999 ($120 / €85) when it’s not out of stock.

But let’s see how the Pioneer P2S fares against the Moto E when it comes to hardware. Well, Gionee’s smartphone is equipped with a 1.3GHz dual-core processor, as opposed to Motorola’s, which is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core CPU.

Gionee Pioneer P2S also packs a Mali400 MP graphic processing unit, 4GB of internal memory and only 512MB of RAM. In comparison, the Moto E comes with 1GB of RAM and 4GB of storage.

As expected, the smartphone offers dual-SIM capability with dual standby support. It also includes microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

On the back, Pioneer P2S features a 5-megapixel photo snapper with LED flash, autofocus and HD (720p) video recording, while in the front, there’s a secondary VGA camera for video calls.

Gionee Pioneer P2S sports a rather small 4-inch capacitive touchscreen display that supports WVGA (800 x 480 pixels) resolution. Connectivity-wise, the smartphone offers decent features, including 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microUSB and GPS with A-GPS support.

The entry-level Android smartphone is powered by a 1600 mAh battery, which is rated by Gionee for up to 345 hours of standby time or up to 12.5 hours of talk time (9 hours in 3G mode).
