I'm not exactly sure what AU Optronics means by affordable 4K UHD LCD panels, but according to certain sources, the display manufacturer will have some ready either in the first quarter of 2014 or the second.

Per information from FlatPanelsHD, AUO is preparing low-cost, or at least mid-cost, UHD panels with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels.

Since the expensive ones cost around several thousands of dollars, these might ship for one or two, or maybe even less than a thousand.

They will still have refresh rates of at least 60 Hz though, and the capability to reproduce 10-bit with dithering.

Monitors will be made out of them, in 27 inches and 32 inches. Essentially, technology is catching up on the PC front, since UHD TV research and development is pretty much mature at this point.
