Fake email claims voluntary work in the Philippines

It is not the first time that the Red Cross is leveraged by cyber crooks running email scams, but in this case the potential victim is promised payment for helping victims of the typhoon in the Philippines.

The message appears to be from the humanitarian organization seeking do-gooders who are allegedly paid $250 / €200 per day as part of a recruiting operation.

A list of positions that still need to be filled is provided in the message, along with a membership form that needs to be filled with personal information.

The money offer sounds too good to be true, and it actually is; in order to earn it, an advance fee needs to be sent to the organization, as an “enrollment fee.”

Even if this initial sum is paid, the scammers would request additional funding, for other job-related expenses that need to be covered, according to Hoax-Slayer.

Obviously, there is no such job offer and the Red Cross is not involved in any way with the distribution of these emails.

This is just another “advance fee” scam orchestrated by crooks. Apart from the money sent by the victim, they also collect private details, which can be leveraged in other fraud attempts.
