14 DAY TRIAL // On May 3, the Queens Zoo in NYC welcomed a baby southern pudu deer. The doe was born at this animal sanctuary, and weighed just one pound (0.45 kilograms) when arriving into this world.
“There’s small, tiny, and teensy - and in the world of deer, this one is the latter. The Queens Zoo’s pudu, a species that ranks as the world’s smallest deer, gave birth to a doe weighing just a pound at birth.”
“As an adult, she could grow to 20 pounds [little over 9 kilograms],” the Queens Zoo writes on its official website.
Staff at the zoo says that the baby deer still feeds on milk from its mother, and that it will take some time before it transitions to solid food.
Presently, the doe spends most of its time hanging around its enclosure. Mom Josephine and dad Hamilton are trailing its every step, International Business Times reports.
Southern pudu deer are native to Chile and Argentina. Presently, they are not considered to be an endangered species.
However, they are listed as vulnerable, which is why the birth of this doe was welcomed by conservationists.
