Staff at Dallas Zoo in Texas, US, is happy to announce that a young Asian small-clawed otter born at this facility earlier this year is healthy and growing stronger each day.

The otter pup arrived into this world on January 25 and was off to a rather rocky start. This is because its mom did not deliver any other offspring, and otter pups usually do not survive if they do not have siblings.

What's more, its mom was rather old, i.e. 12 years and 19 months old, at the time it gave birth to it, and keepers feared that this would also affect the pup's development and overall health condition.

However, the otter pup somehow managed to pull through, and caretakers say that it is now strong and confident enough to even go for a swim in a small pool every once in a while, Zoo Borns informs.

“This is a remarkable accomplishment for our team,” says Dr. Lynn Kramer, vice president of animal operations and welfare at the Dallas Zoo.

“The safe birth of a single pup to the oldest otter mother to give birth has required skilled, dedicated care,” the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine adds.

The young Asian small-clawed otter pup now living in captivity at Dallas Zoo in Texas, US, has been named Tasanee, which is Thai for “beautiful view.”
