Staff at the Kansas City Zoo in the United States are happy to announce that the facility is now home to an adorable Humboldt penguin chick that emerged from its egg just days ago, on May 25.

For the time being, the baby penguin is hidden from curious gazes inside its nest, and its parents are the ones in charge of looking after it, Zoo Borns informs.

Vets have had the chance to take one quick look at it, and say that, as far as they can tell, the young Humboldt penguin is as healthy as its gets and growing stronger every day.

Since it will probably be a few weeks until the young penguin is confident enough to go about exploring the world, visitors to the zoo will have to wait a while longer to see it, the same source tells us.

According to wildlife researchers, this species of penguins inhabits the Pacific coasts of Peru and Chile, and feeds on fish it finds while swimming in the open sea.

Over the years, the overall population of wild Humboldt penguins has decreased to a considerable extent. Hence, the International Union for Conservation of Nature now considers this species to be a vulnerable one.
