14 DAY TRIAL // About a week ago, a female elephant living in captivity at the Howletts Wild Animal Park in the United Kingdom delivered an adorable calf.
The baby elephant, a photo of which is available above, was born after a gestation period of over 21 months to mother Tammi, and vets reassure that it is healthy and active.
Given the fact that this little bundle of joy is its mother's fifth offspring, there is little doubt that Tammi is experienced enough to make sure the newborn calf is well taken care of.
“Many other females, including all Tammi’s extended family assisted in getting the calf to its feet within minutes and encouraging it to suckle,” keeper Natalie Boyd said in a statement.
“This is Tammi’s fifth baby and she is, once again, proving to be an excellent mother, and this time is assisted by Jara, Uzuri and even little four year old Manzi,” the caretaker added, as cited by Zoo Borns.
Vets who have had the chance to examine the baby elephant say that it is a female. For the time being, keepers have not come up with a name for it. Still, they promise they will find a suitable moniker as soon as possible.
As reported on several occasions, elephants are currently in danger of going extinct. This is chiefly due to poaching activities and the illegal trade in animal body parts.
