Adobe has found a critical vulnerability in its Reader X and Acrobat X applications for all supported platforms, including Mac OS X. For Mac users in particular, the Photoshop makers plan to roll out a security patch early next year.

Talking about the vulnerability in a dedicated advisory on their web site, Adobe reveals that the bug “could cause a crash and potentially allow an attacker to take control of the affected system.”

The company acknowledges that there have been reports that the vulnerability is being actively exploited, though such occurrences are “limited”, and they’ve only happened on the Windows platform.

According to the advisory, “We are planning to address this issue in Adobe Reader and Acrobat X and earlier versions for Macintosh as part of the next quarterly update scheduled for January 10, 2012.”

A more detailed look at the advisory is available here.
