A new move from Adobe is designed to make PDF documents play nice with mobile devices. In this regard, at the GSMA Mobile World Congress, Adobe introduced the Adobe Reader Mobile SDK, promising an evolved experience when it comes to the way in which mobile devices download, manage, and display PDF content. The software development kit is offered to manufacturers of mobile phone and handheld devices and offers support not only for reflowable PDF, but also for Adobe’s content protection technology, and the EPUB XML-based file format.

“With Adobe Reader Mobile SDK, Adobe is expanding the reach of PDF content, making it easier for mobile users to engage with rich digital publications on the go,” revealed Kevin M. Lynch, vice president and general manager of the Acrobat family of products at Adobe. “Consumers are demanding content that looks great on a small screen and publishers want to ensure a viewing experience that enhances their brand and, where appropriate, protects their content. This new software engine delivers on both expectations.”

Concomitantly with the availability of the SDK, Adobe also announced that a number of companies are already set to use the solution in order to deliver both hardware and software products embracing the new technology. Adobe mentioned Bookeen, iRex Technologies, Lexcycle, Plastic Logic, Polymer Vision Ltd., and Spring Design among those that would adopt the Adobe Reader Mobile SDK.

The Adobe Reader Mobile SDK is positioned to bridge publishers of digital content with potential customers that are using mobile devices. The SDK will take rich digital publications to the next level, enabling text that adapts itself to the dimensions of the screen without the format being affected.

“With support for reflowable PDF and the new EPUB format, we are able to deliver richer reading experiences to digital book lovers,” added Steve Haber, president, Digital Reading Business Division, Sony Electronics. “The Reader ships with support for Adobe Reader Mobile SDK today and allows consumers to acquire eBooks from a variety of sources, including public libraries. Our goal is to foster an open content environment that enables our customers to maximize the use and enjoyment of their Readers.”
