In a security advisory published on Tuesday, Adobe warned that, by crafting a malicious PDF file, a remote attacker could cause crash of the applications or even commandeer the targeted computer.

The vulnerability seems to be a buffer overflow within a core application plug-in that is a part of Acrobat and Reader application.

Buffer
overflows occur when a program allows data to be written beyond the allocated end of a buffer in memory. By introducing supplementary data to cause an overflow of the buffer, the computer can be set to insert and execute damaging codes.

This vulnerability of the Adobe Reader system causes damage to Windows, Mac OS, Linux and Solaris. On Acrobat, it affects Windows and Mac OS.

On an advisory posted on Tuesday, the monitoring company Secunia stated that those system vulnerabilities are a highly critical problem and advised all the Windows and Mac OS users to upgrade to other versions. Therefore, the Adobe Reader users on Windows and Mac OS should upgrade to version 7.0.3 or 6.0.4; Acrobat users running Windows and Mac OS should update to 7.0.3, 6.0.4 or 5.0.10, and finally, Linux and Solaris users should go for 7.0.1.

Meanwhile, the California-based manufacturer has prepared updates for its customers, so the problem should be fixed anytime now.
