An updated flavor of the Adobe AIR for Android application is now available for download, namely version 14.0.0.110, with updated support for the x86 (Intel) architecture.

In the application’s release notes, Adobe explains that support for Intel x86 Android to AIR is accompanied by the presence of an ADT command line option (-arch), which will enable developers to package apps with Android x86 support.

However, the company also explains that only captive runtime packaging is currently allowed for x86 architecture, which means that APK targets (apk, apk-debug and apk-captive-runtime) will also be packaged with captive runtime.

Additionally, the new flavor of the app brings along Gamepad support for web games, which means that owners of Android smartphones and tablets will be able to use their devices as gamepads.

“AIR Gamepad feature enables the app developers to provide a second screen on Android mobile devices for the Flash based browser games,” Adobe explains.

“AIR Gamepad API enables Flash based browser apps to connect to a paired Android device running the AIR Runtime app and therefore allowing the Android devices to be used as game controllers or second-screen interfaces.”

Some of the features that the new functionality comes with include Gesture, Touch, and Accelerometer events, Vibration, and the option to customize the AIR gamepad screen by applying personal skins.

For those out of the loop, we should note that Adobe AIR was designed as a platform that allows developers to build apps and games targeted at multiple operating systems out there.

“Adobe AIR application enables you to have your favorite games and web apps with you all the time. AIR Runtime technology powers some of the best-selling and award-winning mobile apps and games on Google Play Store,” the application’s description explains.

In addition to bringing said new enhancements to gaming on Android device, the new app iteration also sports a variety of bug fixes, which should result in a better overall experience for all users.

Apparently, a series of known issues are still present in the new Adobe AIR 14.0.0.110 for Android, and developers interested in taking advantage of the new functionality should have a look at them before getting started.

For that, they should head over to the official release notes for the app, where example code for taking advantage of the new Android x86 support is also available.
