Adobe Systems Incorporated announced that their open framework designed to help build custom media players was very much appreciated by global media companies, content delivery networks, publishers and advertising networks. The announcement was made at the 2009 Streaming Media East Conference. The framework, codenamed Strobe, is designed to set a new standard when it comes down to media players and it provides production-ready components to streamline the development process thus making the job easier for developers.

The Strobe framework has seen a growth in popularity ever since its release, and more than 20 companies in the online media space have announced their support. Jim Guerard, vice president and general manager of Dynamic Media at Adobe, stated, “By providing all the key components for online video player development, the Strobe framework will drastically save time for media companies who don’t want to start the process from scratch.”

All the media player features that can be found in the Adobe Flash Media Server 3.5 software are also found in Strobe. The framework even includes DVR functionality with pause and seek options for live videos, HTTP progressive delivery support and pluggable support for multiple content delivery networks. All these options will help media player developers improve their viewers’ experience. Strobe offers Adobe developers and partners all the advantages of the Adobe Flash Platform.

The framework will give developers the possibility to add advertising or social network integration into their software but spare them of all the coding. It will also offer them the opportunity to use only the part they need, assemble it with certain plug-and-play components and thus obtaining the desired result.

Glenn Goldstein, vice president of Media Technology Strategy for MTV Networks Digital Media, stated, “MTV Networks welcomes Adobe’s move toward an open model for media player development. The Strobe framework will enable best-of-breed components to be readily integrated, reducing development costs and creating improved functionality for content distributors.”
