It needs to be, because athletes tend to sweat, which isn't good for gizmos

Nowadays, smartwatch announcements seem to happen every other week, and sometimes several times a week. Not surprising, when even sports clothing and footwear makers launch such things.

Granted, Adidas doesn't limit itself to just clothes and footwear, but it's also not exactly a maker of consumer electronics.

Nevertheless, Adidas has announced, or at least has been found to be preparing, a Smartwatch.

Well, at least it will look like a smartwatch, even though its main purpose will be different from those of, say, Sony Smartwatch 2 and Samsung Galaxy Gear.

Whereas those two are, in a sense, extensions of your smartphone, the device that Adidas is preparing is a fitness tracker with some extra perks.

The watch has movement sensors that supervise training, as well as Wi-Fi and a touch-capable screen.

“We’re not trying to make a smartwatch, per se, but the smartest running watch,” Paul Gaudio, head of Adidas Interactive, said at the GigaOm Mobilize conference, according to SlashGear. “It’s something we’ll look at as we go into 2014 as we look at distribution.”

In addition to movement sensors, the device has an integrated GPS and heart rate sensor. Basically, it takes your pulse. The wrist position is useful like that.

Sadly, Adidas decided against actually disclosing all the specifications, so we suppose we should feel lucky we know about the Bluetooth connection and the ability to play music or provide training-related audio notification.

The watch should also be able to be paired with headphones, synchronize with Adidas' miCoach fitness cloud and store some premade fitness routines from the web-based service.

Everything is enclosed in an aluminum, magnesium and glass construction, which renders the watch resistant to water (mostly useful to ward off sweat, since diving will still overcome the resistance). Sales will start on November 1, for a price of $399 / €399.
