Critics have dubbed Adele the Queen of Pain because she can express it like no other artist of our time. In the just-released video, this is, if we’re allowed the pun, painfully obvious.
Shot in Paris on the bank of Seine in the early hours of morning, by director Jake Nava, the video is, just like the song, simple, daunting and heartbreaking.
Adele is pining for a lost love, while she wanders the streets almost like a ghost: indifferent and invisible to the world and, most importantly, to the one she’s just lost.
There are no cheap tricks, no costume changes, no special FX: just Adele shot in (sometimes blurry) black and white – and that superb voice of hers.
