Those who were wondering what they could possibly use those extra optical disk bays for have received their answer, in the shape of the Addonics 2.5” and 3.5” Snap-In Disk Array removable drive systems.

If there is anything that any PC chassis has, it is optical disk bays, those 5.25-inch spaces where a DVD drive or Blu-ray unit usually sits.

Most chassis have one or more too many of those things, however, and they usually stay unused, since users seldom have use for more than one ODD (optical disk drive).

Fortunately, IT companies are nothing if not inventive, as proven, most recently, by Addonics.

What the company revealed in its newest press release is a pair of high density removable hard drive systems, one that that accommodates up to four 2.5-inch hard drives or solid state drives, and one that can house up to five 3.5-inch units.

The former is the more compact one, since the four drives can be placed inside a single 5.25-inch bay. Each drive slot has its own power and drive access LEDs.

Meanwhile, the 3.5-inch holster takes up three 5.25-inch bays and is good for any desktop or 4U rack mount system.

All in all, these two should make it easy to expand the HDD or SSD storage capacity in any system, all without any tedious installation process.

All it takes is sliding the thing into the appropriate space and closing the drive door, after which everything is ready.

The 3.5-inch version, being more capacity-oriented and bulky, is for bigger systems, as already said, so its price is a bit more on the high side ($99/72 Euro) than that of the 2.5-inch holder ($69.95/51 Euro).

Prospective buyers that want to make a fully-informed decision need only drop by the official product pages, located here (2.5-inch ) and here (3.5-inch).
