Owners of Android-based mobile phones interested in taking advantage of their devices without ads can now install a new application that blocks them all, namely Adblock Plus.

Released in the Google Play Store today, the application was designed to block all online advertising on Android handsets and tablet PCs that run under version 2.1 and or newer of the platform.

“It blocks all online advertising when browsing, and when using your favorite apps like Angry Birds. It is 100% free and makes your Android device much more enjoyable,” the app’s description reads.

Adblock Plus was built to block all mobile ads, video advertising, banners, push notifications, display advertising, HTML5 advertising, and much more.

The application can be used both on non-rooted and on rooted devices, with various features available in each case.

On rooted devices, the app can block ads both over 3G and Wi-Fi. On non-rooted handsets and tablets with Android 3.1 or later it blocks ads over Wi-Fi.

However, on non-rooted devices with Android 3.0 or earlier there are some manual configurations that users need to take care of. Specific info on the matter can be found on this page.

“Adblock Plus is an open-source, community driven project. Many volunteers are contributing to the development and maintenance of Adblock Plus,” the app’s description continues.

“Currently, there are over forty continuously updating filter lists in over a dozen different languages, ensuring that all obtrusive ads remain blocked.”

According to the team of developers, the app is likely to become one of the highest data using software on the Android device.

“However, this is only because Adblock Plus needs to filter the data to ensure that the ads can be blocked. Adblock Plus is actually only using a fraction of the data shown on your device,” the team explains.

Adblock Plus for Android is available on this page in the Google Play store.
