Adam Levine saw two of his singers on NBC’s The Voice in the bottom 4 and facing elimination the other night, so perhaps this wasn’t the best moment to whisper to his fellow judges that he hated America.

His Twitter would indicate that he meant it as a joke but, whether that’s true or not, he probably never imagined it would be heard across the nation thanks to a hot microphone.

Check it out in the video above, past the 1:00 mark.

As spirits became inflamed online, Adam took to his Twitter for a little clarification.

“joke – noun: 1. something said or done to provoke laughter or cause amusement, as a witticism, a short and amusing anecdote, or prankish act,” he writes.

He also offers dictionary definitions for “humorless,” “light-hearted” and “misunderstand.” Well, you get the idea.
