Adam Lambert ‘For Your Entertainment’ – Album ReviewWell accomplished, versatile and intoxicating glam rock debut |
|
| |
It’s extremely hard and close to unfathomable to speak of a music album as of an “instant classic” when it’s not even out in stores, yet this is precisely what’s happening with Adam Lambert’s debut material “ For Your Entertainment.” Due out on November 23, Lambert’s first studio album is a wonderful collection of intoxicating tracks oscillating from insane electropop / disco / rock to powerful, emotion-laden ballads hailing the arrival of the next glam rock idol. Very high hopes were pinned on Lambert and this was even before he finished off last season of American Idol – and surprisingly came out in second place – which also means that a lot of pressure was put on him to deliver a debut album that would break the mold. In this respect, he more than delivers, with this piece that is mainstream pop yet not, by being so uniquely overboard and beautifully eccentric. Critics agree Lambert has literally taken a page out of music history with “FYE,” a very versatile album that swerves from one sound to another with ease from track to track, taking the listener into that glitzy world where Glambert, the unleashed diva, reigns supreme. For starters, suffice to say that all comparisons between Adam Lambert and Freddie Mercury are not without merit, since only he could mix such apparently campy sound with true quality without losing anything of either. Lambert is not afraid to go from one extreme to another, as neither is he shy to showcase his effortless falsetto voice and how wonderfully it goes with undulations marked by heavy guitar riffs or, on the contrary, heavily synthesized and overproduced beats. Another thing that Adam is extremely comfortable with on “FYE” is emotion in its purest and most touching form (“Soaked,” “Broken Open”) or its remarkable absence, where the void is filled by fun and nothing more (“Music Again,” “For Your Entertainment” and “Sure Fire Winners”).
Architecturally very complex and multi-layered, “FYE” opens strongly with “Music Again,” a radio and club anthem if we ever saw one, with distinct Queen and Mika accents here and there. “For Your Entertainment” follows promptly on the same note, only to have Adam settle down a bit in “Whataya Want from Me.” The pace picks up again with the extremely campy “Strut,” but the rhythm breaks again with the heart-wrenching “Soaked,” a ballad where Lambert’s voice soars and falls down to a whisper as if in a beat of the heart. “FYE” continues on the same tone with ballads interspersed among very up-tempo tracks, marking breathers for listeners who would otherwise run the risk of ending up with a serious case of head rush. That much diversity and distinct sounds, like an explosion, as well as different topics can, at times, work against the album in that it becomes intoxicating, as some critics also point out. This doesn’t happen necessarily because Lambert is trying too hard to prove himself, but rather because of the many producers whom he co-opted to work with and who have each come with their distinctive elements. The result can be compared to breathing in a very strong fragrance, like when standing for far too long in a room filled with vases with imperial lilies. One inevitably gets a dizzy spell – which is perhaps why Adam has chosen as closer the moving “Broken Open” and, as a bonus, the “2012” track “Time for Miracles,” yet another superbly crafted ballad. The final paradox is that, once the dizzy spell is gone, one inevitably wants to relive the album experience over and over again. If this is what one could describe a classic by, together with the richness of sounds, styles and the unmistakable display of utmost talent, then “For Your Entertainment” is a classic by all means. The GoodGiven the hype that Adam Lambert has been getting ever since before the American Idol finale, it’s wonderful to see that “For Your Entertainment,” his debut album, more than delivers. Comfortable with anything eccentric to borderline insane, this “true American Idol,” as some critics dare call him, proves that pop and mainstream music doesn’t necessarily have to mean overproduced, unnecessary and mediocre – and definitely not when Lambert’s fearlessness and talent come into play. The BadCritics lament that Adam Lambert was not allowed to showcase his amazing personality and style on “For Your Entertainment” because of the many collaborators he had to work with for it. This, in turn, leads to a certain sense of being overwhelmed halfway through the album, with the possibility of the listener finding it too much, the explosion of energy and sound too strong to handle. Still, it’s these “imperfections” that make “FYE” that much better and “real,” critics agree. The TruthIn very few words, Adam Lambert’s “For Your Entertainment” is a must listen, even for those who do not find glam rock / electropop to their liking, just to be able, 10 or so years from now on, to say “I witnessed that historical moment in music when mainstream became something else.” Complex in sound and even more so in structure, Adam Lambert’s impressive vocals are the threads that hold “FYE” together in one astonishing piece.

| Comment #1 by: DannyH on 21 Nov 2009, 20:36 GMT | reply to this comment | It has been said that it is not humanly possible to live up to the hype generated about Adam Lambert - but he delivers in this effort. 'Intoxicated' is exactly how I felt the first time I heard FYE in its entirety. Your statement that 'once the dizzy spell is gone, one inevitably wants to relive the album experience over and over again' is so true. And the best part of all? This is only his first CD and we will be hanging on the edge of our seats waiting for more from this man, and looking forward to watching him grow and change, and flex his talent to the max in the future. Have to give this one an A and expect an A+ next time! |
| Comment #1.1 by: Maja Hamerlinska on 25 Nov 2009, 14:14 GMT | I agree,I am listening to it over and over again,I have headache, but just can't stop....I can imagine how itis to hear him live!!!He is already considered as controversial, but that's his beauty and uniquness! |
| Comment #1.2 by: G Warren on 17 Dec 2009, 01:43 GMT | I totally agree with everything you said! But here is my problem :) - now I wake up every morning around 3am with the words to whatever the last Adam song I was listening to running through my head. Takes me forever to get back to sleep!!! Adam, I know what I want from you.....another SUPER AMAZING CD and PRONTO!!!! I haven't listened to a CD over and over again since I was a teen listening to Thriller!! |
| Comment #2 by: chickc on 22 Nov 2009, 01:20 GMT | reply to this comment | You may very well be right. It may well be a n instant classic already. The songs grow on you over several listens. Its kinda like a wine you haven't experienced before. You've been told it was great but until you've acquired a taste for it on your own, you just dont know. Get a glass of wine, and enjoy Adam's samplings, but do it by yourself, so you can really appreciate its true texture. |
| Comment #3 by: JLM on 22 Nov 2009, 07:27 GMT | reply to this comment | Love the Album - Adam definately delivered on his promise and gave us exactly what he said he would. The Glam God emerges!! |

| Comment #5 by: Cathysidol on 22 Nov 2009, 07:59 GMT | reply to this comment | Just received my Deluxe version today, awesome, and agree with reviewer , those of us that thought we were witnessing a super star emerge before us (Adam ) from day one ,can now feel some satisfaction. You are right 10 years from now he will still be rocking and we can say yea told you so. Broken Open is so beautiful , is surrounds you , is mesmerizing, few artists can acheive such perfection. Soaked , well its a track that Bellamy/Muse rightfully felt Adam could bring to life. I just want to jump up and dance to Fever , Strut, FYE, WWFM , Music Again, oh forget it, there all good. Wishing Adam well , you got it , own it !! Strut!!! |

| Comment #8 by: spencersmom on 22 Nov 2009, 11:52 GMT | reply to this comment | This is the best review of all good reviews he got on this album. Everything you said is right. This album is a must listen even if youre not a fan of a glam rock electropop. The songs on this album are addicting, the more you listen to it, the more you get addicted. The lyric and beats of the songs are fun and sexy and enjoyable. I've been listening to it over and over. This is the first time I get excited to the album. This album is the best debut album of all time. I highly recommended this album to everyone and you will enjoy it. Five stars for me. |

| Comment #10 by: kaceyalum on 22 Nov 2009, 12:46 GMT | reply to this comment | I listened to FYE and can not get enough of it. I found myself comparing Adam's voice from Idol to the FYE voice. I felt that the creativity he showed through his singing on Idol could never be topped. This album is gut renching, to say the least. It is dance, happy, get down and enjoy - a feeling that I love. Adam has grown vocally and personally throughout Idol. This album shows his growth from "let me show what I can do" to "I have delivered and I am here to stay and entertain you"!!!
Enjoy the album and Adam's future in the music industry. |
| Comment #11 by: steve taylor on 22 Nov 2009, 12:52 GMT | reply to this comment | After waiting expentantly for something special, I was highly disappointed.
Britney Spears soundalike on 2 tracks, a bad Queen on another with a poor Marc Bolan on one too.
Sounds like sanitised rock/pop and I look forward to his next effort when he's left alone to explore his own talents, or, better still, an album called 'Well Covered' with a collection of his inimitable takes on rock and pop classics - as in the Ameican Idol series.
I'm still a huge fan - albeit a disappointed one! |
| Comment #12 by: drvV on 22 Nov 2009, 13:02 GMT | reply to this comment | I agree 100% about this i depth review. Adam's unique voice is the common thread here. The whole album streams like a radio station with an array of great ballads and super contagious beats.Loved your review! |
| Comment #13 by: VAMom on 22 Nov 2009, 13:10 GMT | reply to this comment | Wow Elena - What a great review of Adam's CD. The music is addictive. It has been quite an experience watching Adam go from AI contestant to putting out this incredible CD. I hope you don't mind if I put a link to your reivew at The Glambert Rock. We are all about everything Adam. I hope the world can "handle what he's 'bout to do". Go Adam! |
| Comment #14 by: elw on 22 Nov 2009, 13:11 GMT | reply to this comment | Thanks for great review. I believe Adam will become iconic. He has it all, looks, sex appeal, an incredible personality and the most AMAZING voice I've ever heard. I just can't get enough of him. |
| Comment #15 by: susan on 22 Nov 2009, 13:50 GMT | reply to this comment | This reviewer just gets it!. I find myself listening and listening to this cd FYE. I find some new sound or nuance every time. Adam will take it "over the top" with his performances. He is also EXTREMELY SENSUAL visually. Gotta mention that! |
| Comment #16 by: JimL on 22 Nov 2009, 14:23 GMT | reply to this comment | Great Review, I agree with you 100%..I listened to it on the internet, and had to have it for my car...so purchased the CD pre-order..This guy can sing..there is not a track on the CD that I don't like...GREAT JOB ADAM....Hats off to you Elena..you get it... |
| Comment #17 by: Lisa W on 22 Nov 2009, 14:32 GMT | reply to this comment | Wow, great review, I totally agree and thanks for putting so well how I was feeling about the album. Personally one think I totally love about it is its diversity, firstly he has the talent to do just about anything so why limit himself? Even within each song there is different pacing and and interesting twists, honestly one thing I am so sick of in music today in the homogeneous nature of it all, you listen to a typical album and you really only need 2 or 3 songs to figure the whole thing out and even the artists today all sound alike, you really can't tell them appart anymore. I guess people who like the same old same old will find this too much like the ones who found him too much on the show but I think more will find this a breath of fresh air. |
| Comment #18 by: amanda on 22 Nov 2009, 14:41 GMT | reply to this comment | Great review! lovin Adams albumtotally addictive and im annoying all my friends and family as its on ALL the time!!!! (but i think they secretly love it too) |
| Comment #19 by: prgemgirl on 22 Nov 2009, 14:50 GMT | reply to this comment | INSTANT CLASSIC!!!!! Yes Elena, you're so right. Adqm's CD will still sound fresh ten, fifteen years from now... It will never be boring. Excellent review!!!! |
| Comment #20 by: Roaster on 22 Nov 2009, 14:57 GMT | reply to this comment | I don't usually comment on these review boards, but have to with your review of FYE.
You have nailed this album!! Thank you for your wonderful opinions.
This family has watched Adam from the very first time he was interviewed ond tried out for Idol, knowing this man was going to go very far. I am a 50 year old mother that went to many concerts in my teens and 20's. I was lucky to have seen Queen with Freddie Mercury a few times. No one since has had such stage presence, talent, and an amazing voice. Until Adam....
It's great to hear the Music Again..... |
| Comment #21 by: Judy on 22 Nov 2009, 15:13 GMT | reply to this comment | Thanks for a fantastic review, since I was rendered speechless by the music on this album, your words reflect exactly how I feel ! | Comment #22 by: Lynne on 22 Nov 2009, 15:17 GMT | reply to this comment | I loved your review of Adam Lambert's article. You expressed so articulately the way this album makes me feel. Adam Lambert is really something special, and you have captured the essence of why that is. |
| Comment #23 by: LHF1959 on 22 Nov 2009, 15:31 GMT | reply to this comment | I love reading these great reviews. Though I don't need anyone to tell me to love Adam's music, I can't stop listening, we do want him to be well received and celebrated by the industry and the critics since that will allow him to be introduced to those who may not listen otherwise. DO NOT MISS THIS! He is awesome. |
| Comment #24 by: SA Fan Michele on 22 Nov 2009, 15:33 GMT | reply to this comment | I cant wait for this CD to be released in SA. Thanks for a great review. |

| Comment #26 by: virg on 22 Nov 2009, 15:51 GMT | reply to this comment | Great album. Even those cuts that initially was not to my liking is beginning to grow on me. I personally love WHATA YA WANT FROM ME, AFTERMATH & ALL THE BALADS (SOAKED, BROKEN OPEN & LOADED SMILE). Among the upbeat tunes I prefer FYE, Strutt & Fever. Whataya want From Me is so radio friendly..hopefully this will be picked as the second single. |
| Comment #27 by: sam on 22 Nov 2009, 15:59 GMT | reply to this comment | Excellent review. I love every song on this awesome new album!! |
| Comment #28 by: elizabeth on 22 Nov 2009, 18:03 GMT | reply to this comment | Steve, AMERICAN IDOL SEASON 8 IS OVER. Adams album is called FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT. Tha means a little bit of everything, as he explores his new musical freedom. Why would you want him to stick to covers of rock and pop classics? He is Adam Lambert, not frigging Wayne Newton . Adam attemped to include something for everyone, Idol fans included, in this absolutely gorgeous, well executed album. Hard to believe you did not find something to like. You will continue to be disappointed, because I can assure you that you will not be seeing an album called WELL COVERED(!). Adam Lambert is too artistic and excited about all the musical possibilities before him to do that. Besides it would be career suicide. Guess you better go buy the other guys music. |
| Comment #29 by: Kareen on 22 Nov 2009, 18:24 GMT | reply to this comment | The first time Adam stood on stage on Idol, I knew he will be the next big Star.
Since I have been around for a while, I remember Elvis's start and that is what Adam reminded me of.
Adam is not only a great Entertainer, he seems to be a very nice, polite and very giving person. I root for him and wish him all the luck in the world. |
| Comment #30 by: Telise on 22 Nov 2009, 20:44 GMT | reply to this comment | FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT is the best album release so far by an American Idol contestant or champion. He delivered exactly what he promised: he stated that the album would have songs with different vibes and styles that almost everyone would love. His voice completely covers the spectrum, and he can deliver both rock and ballads in such a superlative manner. It is absolutely amazing that he only had 2 months in which to complete his freshman work of art. So called "fans" will continue to be disappointed in him if they will constantly expect him to replicate his style from American Idol (which is basically a GAME SHOW...with one "winner"). He did his absolute best with the cover songs on Idol, but now he is generating original and fresh music so we have to amend our expectations. I LOVE these songs and will gladly wait in line for his second, third, fourth albums and beyond. |
| Comment #31 by: Share on 22 Nov 2009, 22:10 GMT | reply to this comment | I have to say that this is hands down the best album I have owned in the last decade. I think this may go down as my all time favorite. WOW, just, WOW. I hope people give him a chance and just try it out. |
| Comment #32 by: Ashley B on 22 Nov 2009, 23:05 GMT | reply to this comment | ELENA- BROVO TO YOU for the BEST AND MOST TRUTHFUL review!! 100% agree. I am SPELLBOUND by this CD and ADAM that I really believe he put us all under a supernatural spell during AI!! He is MIND BLOWING TALENTED SINGER, OOZES SEX APPEAL OUT EVERY PORE, BEYOND HANDSOME, INTELLIGENT, AND HUMBLE!! WOW!
This CD has so much variety that it's hard to believe. Adam takes you on a journey with these songs. First I'm dancin, then I'm strippin, then I'm inspired, then I'm cryin!!
Adam will undoubtably be tha biggest star in the WORLD!!
LOVE YOU ADAM AND BLESS YOU FOREVER!!! |
| Comment #33 by: Kareen on 23 Nov 2009, 20:00 GMT | reply to this comment | After last nights performance I change my mind about Adam becoming a huge star.
He will only appeal to a certain group of people and I am not one of them.
He is right about the double standard, but I feel they all go to far with their vile performances.
Adam is such a great singer and after last night, I feel only SADNESS |
| Comment #34 by: Glamitup on 24 Nov 2009, 18:52 GMT | reply to this comment | Ok I was kind of mad at Adam after the AMA's but now that I am listening to this cd, all is forgiven!!! He has put out a beautiful and feel good production. Go Adam! |
| Comment #35 by: Millie_G on 26 Nov 2009, 16:50 GMT | reply to this comment | I'm SO buying this album :)
It's OBVIOUS that his sexy performance at the AMAs will only make sales soar, despite the "scandal".
After that performance he's proved he's such a ground-breaking, earth-shattering star, apart from being incredibly talented and incredibly hot!
He'll be the pop star of the new generation!
YOU GO ADAM!! |
| Comment #36 by: susan davies on 30 Nov 2009, 00:44 GMT | reply to this comment | I had mixed feelings about Adam's AMA performance.
But, with that said, I love the CD.
There are a few songs on there that I think deserve some radio air-play.
I love Fever.

| Comment #37 by: Michelle on 30 Nov 2009, 18:50 GMT | reply to this comment | I am a die-hard Adam fan, & of course, I bought the album & I cannot stop listening to it! I really do not have enough words to express how wonderful the album is & how it makes you feel song by song...just blown away! The album is breathtaking & I LOVE every song. I have been skipping over songs from other artists' albums for years now, & eventually, I stopped buying albums altogether, but I certainly WILL buy EVERYTHING that Adam puts out! His voice is captaviting and mesmorizing! I just love him, his performance style & his songwriting! I keep playing it over & over to hear the many different layers of his songs....OMGG, I have not been so excited about an artist in like...forever! Adam did in fact deliver everything he said he would. He deserves the BEST of everything, as this album is single-handedly the most diverse & the best album that I've heard in decades. Well done, Adam! You are the REAL DEAL & a very TALENTED artist!!! I am honored to listen to & be a part of this Adam experience! Hop on board everyone! You WILL NOT regret the ride...Rock on, Adam!☺☺♥♥ |

| Comment #42 by: Susan Sutton on 30 Dec 2009, 02:51 GMT | reply to this comment | Like so many here I have been around a while too. I've seen some come and go, got in on the tail end of the Elvis generation-was a Beatle Fan, back then-- thought all good talent seemed to come from Europe for a good while. Then got hooked on watching the excitement of new upcoming singers on AI. I got super excited about some of them too. But when I first heard Adam Lambert sing, I called my family and begged them to get on board. I went bonkers. I felt that I had witnessed a 1st. And as the weeks turned out, and all was said and done-I was right! So were all us Glamberts. And I believe Adam will acquire trillions more as he comes out with more of his incredible self. When I listen to Adam I feel I can hear him singing out his heart, believing that his words are not just his feelings but they also rock into our hearts and he thirsts to do so. Addicting is an understatement! I love every song. FYE is the finest work of mastery I have ever heard. And it is because of who sings and performs it with the help of his believers-others in the industry that also know they are watching the birth of a new music genre. If you are not yet hooked listen-listen again. I believe this one will make you want to listen to the music again and again and again! |
