Apple says the 8-megapixel iSight camera in its iPhones is now the most popular camera in the world. With iPhone 5, it’s even better, according to the Cupertino giant. A gallery on the company’s site looks impressive enough to make you leave that hefty DSLR at home on your next trip.

According to the tech specs sheet, the iPhone 5’s new camera has been completely redesigned with enhanced optical performance, even though it’s 25 percent smaller than the camera in Apple’s last iPhone, the 4S.

“iPhone is the most popular camera in the world. For good reason. Photos look so stunning, it’s hard to believe they were taken with a mobile phone,” says the company run by Tim Cook.

“And everything that made the iSight camera in iPhone 4S the world’s favorite is now on iPhone 5 — and then some.”

Below are a few images taken with the iPhone 5 camera. We can all agree they look flawless, but they’re also Apple’s own work.

It will take some real life tests to confirm that the iPhone 5’s camera really performs this well, even in the best lighting conditions possible.

The new iSight features a sapphire crystal lens cover. It’s thinner but, at the same time, it’s also more durable than standard glass. It also achieves images that are literally crystal clear.

A new panorama feature lets users capture awesome panorama shots of up to 28 megapixels. Users simply move the camera across a scene in one smooth motion, and iPhone takes care of the rest.

“The new panorama feature lets you capture everything from a family reunion group photo to a jaw-dropping shot of the Grand Canyon,” Apple explains.

“With one smooth motion you can shoot up to an impressive 240 degrees. The gyroscope, A6 chip, and Camera app work together to create one seamless, high-resolution panorama up to 28 megapixels.”

iPhone 5 also shoots some impressive video too. It sports improved stabilization, video face detection for up to 10 faces, and it enables you to take stills as you record a movie.

Thanks to the A6 chip, you’ll notice 40 percent faster photo capture, better low-light performance, and improved noise reduction, Apple says.
