Lolita, an orca living at the Miami Seaquarium, is now the main focus of a lawsuit intended to rescue it from its present days living conditions.

Apparently, Lolita is currently living in an enclosure which does not abide by the standards listed under the Animal Welfare Act, meaning that its tank is not big enough to accommodate the marine animal and its needs, and the animal lacks proper protection from potential threats to its health.

On the other hand, Seaquarium employees argue that Lolita is well fended for, and that these accusations lack valid arguments.

“Lolita has been part of the Miami Seaquarium family for more than 42 years, and is as active and healthy as ever,” argued Andrew Hertz on behalf of Seaquarium.

Furthermore, “Lolita will continue to be an ambassador for her species from her home at Miami Seaquarium.”

The lawsuit was filed by organizations such as Animal Legal Defense Fund (ALDF), PETA, the Orca Network, which benefit from the support of private citizens, against the US Department of Agriculture, which supposedly recently allowed Seaquarium to continue keeping Lolita in captivity.
