Activision Publishing is sending word that it has nailed down the release dates for its upcoming open world game Prototype.

The title will arrive in Europe on June 5, while North American gamers will have to wait until June 9 to get their hands on it. The videogame is set to ship for the Xbox 360 console from Microsoft, the PlayStation 3 platform from Sony and the PC, using Games for Windows.

Prototype has been in development for a long time, with Sierra initially being the brand set to publish the title. After the merger between Activision and Blizzard, the game was delayed for quite some time, but judging by the images and videos we've seen in the recent few weeks, it's been all for the better, as it looks phenomenal.

Prototype, a game created by Radical Entertainment, is set to tell the story of Alex Mercer, who joins a long line of videogame protagonists who are amnesic. But in losing his memories, Mercer has gained something else, the ability to shapeshift. He can stalk people, take over their identities, gain their memories, and acquire their abilities as he tries to make sense of what has happened to them. He can also morph his body into an awesome tool of destruction, free running through the city of New York while battling a variety of enemies.

Of course, Mercer's memories are tied to a long hidden conspiracy, so the hero of the game will have to fight quite a few enemies in his quest for knowledge. On the one hand, there's the military, which is led by the Blackwatch elite squad (an obvious Warhammer 40,000 influence). On the other hand, there's the Infected that are threatening New York, turning whole city areas into no go zones. Between these two factions and in the path of Alex are also civilians and the whole city.
