Redmond-based software company Microsoft and Chinese Windows CE phone original equipment manufacturer YuLong Computer Telecommunication Scientific Co. Ltd. announced yesterday an agreement through which the latter will be able to integrate the former's Exchange ActiveSync protocol into its upcoming mobile phones.

According to the two companies, the licensing of Exchange ActiveSync will enable YuLong Telecommunication to offer mobile phone users the possibility to easily sync e-mails, calendars, contacts and notes between their handset and the Microsoft Exchange Server through the use of Exchange ActiveSync direct push technology. YuLong Telecomunication, the largest Windows CE phone OEM in China, announced that, following this agreement, it planned on launching Coolpad brand handsets that would include the push technology right from the start.

“We are pleased to enter into this patent licensing deal with YuLong Telecommunication for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync,” said Steven Chen, senior director of Microsoft Business Division China. “Microsoft is committed to enhancing the consumer experience through intellectual property (IP) collaboration, and we believe this deal is an important step in continuing to work more collaboratively with companies in China to help deliver better products to consumers and develop a more vibrant IT industry.”

Exchange ActiveSync, the communication protocol that enables synchronization of e-mail, calendar, or contacts with the Microsoft Exchange Server, has been licensed by Microsoft for mobile phones since 2003. According to the software giant, its Exchange ActiveSync technology has already been widely adopted by device vendors like Apple, ASUSTeK Computer, HTC Corporation, Nokia, Palm, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson.

“People in China, as well as the rest of the world, are demanding more secure, better wireless synchronization with their mobile devices. Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync technology has become the choice for mobile synchronization and communication around the world,” said Li Wang, standing vice president of YuLong Telecommunication. “By implementing the Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync specification technology, we are enabling our customers to easily manage their Exchange e-mail, calendar and contacts on their mobile phones.”
