Following Apple’s official discontinuation of the Xsan, Active Storage confirmed plans to come to the rescue. The company run by former Apple staffers has come up with a solution - the ActiveSan.

“Until now, the Apple Xserve was the Metadata Controller of choice for Xsan installations, providing enterprise form factor and capabilities,” Active Storage officials said.

“Xsan users in high-pressure Media and Entertainment markets require datacenter-level quality products to manage their SAN volumes, but also demand the ease of use and setup of Xsan,” according to the company.

“Previously, that meant one thing: Xsan on an Xserve. But all that changes—with ActiveSAN,” said Active Storage.

A high-performance metadata controller appliance for Xsan and StorNext networks, ActiveSAN is a server-based appliance that incorporates Active Storage product design and the rock-solid performance and reliability of an Intel Nehalem server platform, all in a 1U rack form factor.

The server computer uses Linux and the Quantum StorNext SAN file system, under the Active Storage-designed user interface and management suite, to achieve “phenomenal ease of use in deployment and management of the operating system and StorNext.”

The product will be demoed at the NAB 2011 convention in April, Active Storage officials said.

Shipping will begin in the second quarter of 2011 while pricing and configurations are yet to be announced.
