The leader of developer Vigil Games, who works on the Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online project, has said that they are aiming to deliver a more action oriented experience for their MMO because there's an audience which is not getting the game they are seeking from other titles.

Dave Adams, who is the founder of Vigil Games, says that bringing actual action gameplay to MMOs has “just not been a priority” for other developers, adding that, “A lot more attention is put into console games: if you sit down and you play an MMO, and you actually compared it to a triple-A console game, a lot of the stuff would never fly.”

Adams believes that, “That disparity isn’t going to be tolerated for too long: eventually someone’s going to do it and everyone else is going to have to follow suit. We want to be those people, and that pushed us toward a more action- oriented formula.”

Adams has also reiterated the fact that Dark Millenium Online will be offering content for both those who are interested in Players versus Environment battles and for those who prefer the thrill of the Player versus Players engagements.

THQ, the publisher of Dark Millenium Online, says that it will need around 1 million players for the MMO to be successful when it launches, suggesting that the game does not need to directly compete with the behemoth in the MMO space, World of Warcraft, to be a hit.

The game will aim to offer an alternative to traditional gameplay mechanics of the genre and will also face some tough competition from the BioWare developed and Electronic Arts published Star Wars: The Old Republic.

THQ and Vigil Games have not settled on a launch date for Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millenium Online, but the MMO could be on the market in 2012.
