On July 6, an unknown number of Acronis customers were notified of a technical issue as a result of which a spreadsheet containing their email addresses and product upgrade serial numbers ended up being indexed by Google.

According to the email sent out to users, only 14 people accessed the file while it was publicly available, DaniWeb informs.

The Knowledge Base technical issue that occurred on June 29 “made the spreadsheet have lower rights than it should have.”

“We have a strict content management policy that applies different access rights to our Knowledge Base, depending on content – for example, some may be Partner only, some may be Customer only. For reasons we are still investigating, the access control list reset to the default setting, making all content visible, temporarily,” Ed Benack, CCO at Acronis said.

Benack also explained that the issue had been addressed and additional protection mechanisms had been set in place to protect customer data.
