Real hack or a marketing stunt similar to the one pulled by MTV?

Hackers calling themselves Aces & Eights, named after the professional wrestling stable, have breached the Impact Wrestling website (impactwrestling.com) of Total Nonstop Action (TNA) Wrestling. In addition, the hackers have also hijacked the official Impact Wrestling Facebook and Twitter accounts.

The hackers uploaded their own banners and articles on the site and on the social media accounts, HackRead reports.

They urged the Twitter account’s over 230,000 followers to change their avatars to show support for Aces & Eights.

TNA says its IT team is working on regaining access to the compromised system. However, at the moment the website, the Facebook and the Twitter accounts are still displaying the posts published by the attackers.

“During Thursday's IMPACT WRESTLING broadcast on SpikeTV from Chicago, someone affiliated with The Aces and Eights gained access to our secure online network at TNA Headquarters in Nashville, Tennessee,” Impact Wrestling representatives wrote in a post.

“As a result, the Aces conducted a hostile takeover of our Website and Social Media. On Friday night, our Information Technology (IT) personnel regained control of our website. An update on our Social Media will be coming soon. Our Security Department is investigating the situation. We apologize to our fans for any inconvenience this may have caused.”

Considering that Aces & Eights wrestlers are part of the Total Nonstop Action promotion, this might simply be a marketing stunt similar by the one pulled by MTV a few weeks ago. At the time we learned that, apparently, Twitter hacks are cool.

This tweet appears to support the theory: “We'll pick one of you clowns who has our logo as your avatar who is following us to win an ACES shirt tonight. #ShowYourACESSupport.”
