According to the latest news on the Web, the computer maker Acer is about to announce its entrance on the mobile phone market. About a year ago, the company announced plans to make such a move, and it seems that it will finally show up at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona on the 16th of February with its first handset.

Acer is expected to introduce at least one smartphone at MWC. According to the news, the company's CEO as well as its handheld chief will unveil a phone in the evening of February 16th, the opening day of the Mobile World Congress show. The company has sent an invitation to Pocket-lint as well as to others, announcing a “smartphones launch,” which may indicate that there will probably be more than one device released.

Acer's move towards the mobile phone market does not come as a total surprise to us. The computer maker has recently acquired the Taiwan-based mobile manufacturer E-Ten, and it has since been expected to come up with handsets. A few months ago the company announced that it planned to unveil a smartphone at the end of last year or at the beginning of this one.

Acer did not unveil any further information regarding the launch of its smartphones. According to some voices over the Internet, the new handsets might be running under Microsoft's unannounced yet Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system. At the same time, Acer has been reported to plan a significant growth in the mobile phone segment during the next 3 or 5 years.

Even if no information on the availability of its handsets has been disclosed, Acer was suggested to plan on releasing the smartphones on the Western European and Russian markets at first. The company should unveil more details on its plans in Barcelona.
