Announced back in February at the 2011 Mobile World Congress, the Aspire One D257 low-power computer is now starting to become available in stores across Europe, marking the introduction of a new design line for Acer's netbook products.

In fact this is the first major redesign of the Aspire One series undertaken by Acer in about two years, so it marks an important point in the history of the brand.

Compared to the previous Aspire One models, the new D257 features a new touchpad that makes use of a single-button design, a more attractive front lid as well as softer, less rigid lines that make the whole netbook look more dynamic and compact.

On the inside, users will be greeted by the one of Intel's most powerful Atom processors, the N570, which boasts two processing cores, clocked at 1.66GHz, as well as support for the Hyper-Threading technology.

These are paired together with an integrated GMA 3150 graphics core that runs at 200MHz as well as with a single-channel DDR3 memory controller.

The standard version of the Aspire One D257 pairs the Intel processor with 1GB of system memory (2GB are available as an option), a 250GB hard drive, a 2-in-1 card reader, a Crystal Eye webcam, and a 6-cell battery enabling up to 8 hours of operation.

The 10.1-inch LCD panel is able to display 1024x600 pixels and connectivity is provided by a 10/100 Ethernet port and a built-in 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi card.

Compared to other netbooks that share similar features, the D255 distinguished itself thanks to the inclusion of the Android 2.1 operating system which is available as a dual-boot option, next to Windows 7 Starter.

The Acer Aspire One D257 netbook is already available for pre-order from several European e-tailers and its MSRP is set at €250. (via Notebook Journal)
